MIAS level 1&2 Training
The MIAS Mountain-bike Leader/Instructors' Award scheme goes way beyond other courses that are available in the United Kingdom and has national N.V.Q. standard academic accreditation through the Awarding Body Consortium at Reading University.
It is endorsed by the Association of British Cycling Coaches and the Cyclists Touring Club. Furthermore the Adventurous. Activities Licensing Authority recognise MIAS. Many LEA's, Youth Services, YOT's, Prison Service, the Army, Navy and Airforce use MIAS together with numerous Outdoor Centres throughout the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand & Morocco.
Each year, hundreds of participants gain A MIAS qualification. The Level 1 qualification is aimed at those who wish to lead groups of beginners in non-technical terrain (forest tracks, canal towpaths etc). Candidates must have a current first aid certificate or working towards one.
The Level 2 qualification is aimed at those who wish to lead groups of beginners in non technical terrain and intermediate riders in technical (rocky /demanding terrain). Candidate must be in possession of a BELA award, WGL or equivelant or APL. Also a current first aid certificate.
The Level 1 & Level 2 courses are run together. Students & the course director will decide after the initial assessment period which certification the individual candidate will undergo on the course, Level 1 or Level 2. The course has national accreditation with: The Association of British Cycle Coaches (A.B.C.C.), Cyclist's Touring Club (C.T.C.) and is recognised by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority.
Registration for L1 and L2 courses takes place between 08-45 and 09-00 on day one of courses held at our Training venue.
Students may use their own bikes, a full inspection of conformity and safety will be performed by them before they ride (H&S). Alternatively we can provide bikes at a minimal cost of £15.00 per day. Advanced notice needed for bike hire.
Biscuits & fruit will be available during the day as will tea and coffee between some course modules, please bring along a packed lunch on both days.
You must let us know in advance of any medical problems, dietary needs, allergies etc that you have.
We operate a NO SMOKING policy. AS of the 2nd of April 2007 rules relating to smoking in public places in Wales will be observed.
Whilst riding arms must be covered to the wrist, legs to the ankle (no exceptions sorry)
Dirty Clothes and Dirty riding shoes may be left in the entrance hall and the ladies and gents toilets serve as changing rooms.
Health and Safety and protective elements must be observed at all times
Timings are 08.45 registration, 09.00-10.30 Course Modules, 10.30-10.45 Break, 10.45-12.30 Course Modules, 12.30-13.15 Break 13.15-14.00 Bike prep for riding skills, 14.00-15.45 Personal riding skills module, 15.45-16.00 Break 16.00-16.20 de-brief, 16.20-18.00 Route planning for day 2.
Day 2,9.00. Examination module. 09.30-10.00 bike prep, 10.00-15.00 group management riding module, 15.00-15.45 De-brief and break, 15.45-18.30 Assessment and issue of log-books.
Clothing to include wet weather gear, suitable shoes, an approved helmet, a day glow or florescent cycling over vest, riding glasses, suitable riding gloves, a basic emergency repair kit for the cycle and yourself which must include two high calorie bars and a full drinks bottle. Please carry identity at all times with a record of your blood group if you have it.
Please prepare APL a brief resume of your previous riding experience as this will be used as Accredited Previous Learning and will seriously influence your grading. Polish up your riding skills, navigation skills and leadership skills.
Payment terms for these courses are. We require a 50% deposit when booking the course. You can download the booking form on this site. If we cancel you will be offered an alternative date or a full refund. If you cancel within 10 working days of the course date the deposit will be forfeited. The balance falls due on the first morning of the Course. If we remove you from the course because your cycle is unsafe you will forfeit 50% of the total course fee and have to re-apply for inclusion at a later date or you may hire a bike from us.
